I'm looking at a 1989 JD 850 with a loader, backhoe and turf tires(50%). Backhoe:7ft digging depth. 3400 hours on it. New clutch. Any pros or cons on this machine? It's been used but not abused. A little smoke on start up. What should I expect to pay? I'm going to be mowing 5 acres of finished lawn most of the time. Also anyone know the HP PTO and engine? Thanks,Frank

In fair condition the tractor is worth maybe $5,000. But with that many hours it is nearing the end of its service life. You need to consider the cost of engine rebuild, replacing pins, links, bushings, rebuilding cylinders, replacing teeth and wear strips on the hoe. The same would apply to the loader. Rebuild or replacement of hyd. pump. Even if unbelievably well maintained, I would not be inclined to go over $5,000 for the entire unit and even then I would be shooting for something like $2,500. The owner probably is not willing to sell the tractor for this price and I think you would be better off to consider another tractor with far less hours, wear, and tear on it. You may have your own shop and be a very skilled mechanic, in that case it is up to you to consider your time and effort as well as cost of replacement parts.
My father many years back bought an old Ford 4000 backhoe with the selectamatic transmission from the county at an auction for about $4,000. He thought he had gotten quite a good deal until I went over it and showed him all of the wallowed out pins and bushings in the hoe and loader. All the cylinders leaked down badly and the piston rods were in bad shape on many. The engine smoked like a frieght train. There was not one tight fastener, pin, or bushing on this machine. The trans. was junk and did not work right. After we figured up repair costs just to get the machine minimally servicable and working; he just left it sitting there for years until he was able to trade it for an old farm truck.
My point here is just be very aware and consider ALL you would be taking on. Good luck with your decission. ....

I would stay away from this tractor unless the price is fairly low around $3800. 3400 is a lot of hours on an 89. I am guessing this tractor was used as a TLB alot and even if it was well taken care of this kind of operation can be very demanding of tractor this size. If it was 3400 mowing hours that would be a different story because mowing is not as abusive to the machine. You should check the maintance records and look at other equipment this person may own and look at how well he took care of the other equipment as well as the tractor. Be careful ....

I have to disagree with the first two replies. These tractors can last 8-10,000 hours IF! well maintained. Beyond that if you are willing to invest in overhauling it. I would worry about the condition of the hoe if it was used most of those hours. Pins and bushings tend to wear out on these since the hoe is a light duty machine. The clutch is a costly repair on these tractors, so be sure it is in fact in good shape. PTO horse power is 22 on this tractor and I think engine HP is 27. ....

Frank you allready have a 555? If so do you need the smaller BH unit? If not you could get more tractor for your money to mow with. 5 acres is a lot and I would wanna be up at a 72" mower and 30+ HP range.
That said: If the sheet metal is clean & straight showing another degree of care, and the rest is as you say, and you have some mechanical abilities I would not be afraid to buy a used tractor with those hours.
Pins and bushing are not hard to replace. GREEN bushings get real pricey. I would (if they need it) pull things apart during the winter and get pins and bushing from a genaric source.
A little smoke at start up is not a bad thing. It should be a nice light blue and stop after a couple of minutes.
As I've said in other posts my first BABY tractor was a 5year old ford 1500. I paid $5000 used it for 13 years and traded it for $7000. So you may be getting something that will be a good thing.
But as others have said: Check it over closely.
